Experience Amami’s Mangrove Magic at Low Tide
What Makes Low Tide Special in Amami’s Mangroves?
Amami Oshima is famous for its lush mangrove forests, and the experience changes completely depending on the tide. During low tide, large areas of mudflats appear, offering a rare chance to walk through the mangrove roots and observe the dynamic ecosystem from a totally different perspective. Unlike high tide kayaking tours that only paddle through the mangroves, low tide tours offer the unique opportunity to walk across vast mudflats and explore deep inside the mangrove forest on foot.

Activities You Can Enjoy at Low Tide
Kayaking through Narrow Channels
Even at low tide, when the water level is above 100 cm, parts of the mangrove waterways remain navigable by kayak. Paddle through winding mangrove tunnels, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and learn about the plants and animals that thrive in this unique brackish environment.

Mudflat Exploration by Foot
Hop out of your kayak and take a walk directly on the tidal flats. The firm mud surface makes it possible to walk safely. Your guide will point out various creatures and explain their behavior and roles in the mangrove ecosystem.

Wildlife Spotting
The exposed mudflats attract all kinds of fascinating creatures. You can often see:
- Fiddler crabs waving their oversized claws
- Mudskippers fish that walk and skip on land
- Birds searching for their next meal
Don’t forget your camera or smart phone, this is a great chance to capture some of Amami’s most charming wildlife up close.

Tips for Visiting Amami’s Mangroves at Low Tide
Check the Tide Schedule
Low tide changes daily, so it’s important to check the timing in advance. Our guides use tide charts provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency. You can check the exact times of high and low tides, as well as hourly tide levels for the day.
Wear Sandals
You may get muddy, but that’s part of the fun.
We recommend bringing sandals for the tour, as you may walk through muddy areas. If you don’t have any, Link Adventures also offers rental sandals.
Plan your visit between April and November
This is the best season to explore the mangroves at low tide. The weather is warm, and wildlife—especially fiddler crabs—is more active. You’ll have a great chance to witness thousands of them waving their oversized claws on the mudflats.
