A Hands-On Textile Experience with Master Craftsman Hajime
Amami-Fu is an original textile created by master craftsman Mr.Hajime. Using old and unused Oshima Tsumugi silk textile collected from across Japan, each piece is carefully cut and rewoven into a completely new fabric.
In this experience, you weave your own part into a small piece of Amami-Fu, blending the artisan’s skills with your travel memories. The finished textile is made into a panel, so you can take it home as a special souvenir.
Itinerary
Visit a small workshop where the craftsman creates each piece of cloth by hand. Here, you will learn about his daily work, his unique creations, and the story behind Oshima Tsumugi Textile.
Take a seat at a traditional handloom and experience the delicate process of weaving fabric yourself. Through this hands-on activity, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the patience, precision, and craftsmanship required to create each textile.
Relax in a Japanese style home and enjoy tea and local sweets while spending time in conversation with the craftsman. Feel free to ask about his passion for textiles, traditional craftsmanship, and life on the island, and discover the philosophy behind his work.
Meet the Craftsman Tadaaki Hajime
Amami-Fu Textile, created by traditional craftsman Hajime Tadaaki, is an effort to preserve and pass on endangered artisanal techniques to the next generation. Through his work, ancient skills are not only protected, but reimagined for contemporary life, finding their way into modern design, including collaborations with luxury brands such as Ferrari, where his textiles have been used for exclusive automotive interiors.
