Overview
Oshima Tsumugi fabric is a traditional craft from Amami Oshima Island. It has a long history of 1300 years. This tour offers a visit to a traditional Oshima Tsumugi workshop, where you can enjoy hands-on experiences such as kimono dressing, weaving, and mud dyeing. Spend a day immersing yourself in this one-of-a-kind cultural experience found only here in the world!
Itinerary
An artisan will guide you through the process, from spinning the threads, deciding on the design, and weaving to the final completion.
You’ll have the opportunity to see the artisan’s skills up close.

Weaving Experience (90 min~):
Choose your threads and use a traditional Oshima Tsumugi loom to create a small piece of fabric. Take home a 10×10 cm textile as a keepsake.
Kimono Dressing (60 min):
Dress in an Oshima Tsumugi kimono and take photos in a beautiful garden.
Mud Dyeing Experience (120 min):
Try mud dyeing, a key step in creating Oshima Tsumugi. Dye a T-shirt or tote bag and take home your own unique creation.

Additional info
- On Thursdays, only the mud-dyeing experience is available.
- Tour duration varies depending on the selected activity. If the tour includes a lunch break, the cost of lunch is not included in the fee.
- Mud dyeing in the mud field may not be possible depending on the weather conditions. In such cases, you will be able to experience mud dyeing using the prepared mud tubs inside the workshop.
- During the mud dyeing experience, it is recommended to wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty (preferably black in color).
- During the mud dyeing process, a unique scent from the dye may be present. If you are sensitive to smells, we will provide masks during the experience.
FAQ
It is conducted in rainy weather. For the mud dyeing experience, you can participate in the activity inside the artisan studio without getting wet. If it’s heavy rain or various warnings being issued, the activity may be canceled.
Children under the age of 6 can participate only if their parents are able to take care of them during the tour. If they join the experience together, there will be a charge for the child, but if they only accompany without participating, it is free of charge.
