How to Get to Amami?

Flights to Amami

Most visitors travel to Amami Oshima by air.
There are daily direct flights from major Japanese cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Kagoshima.
Because these flights depart from what is often called Japan’s “Golden Route” cities, access to Amami is relatively convenient for international travelers.

Below is an overview of access to Amami Airport from each major city.

By Air from Tokyo

There are direct flights to Amami Oshima from both Haneda Airport and Narita Airport.
The official flight time is listed as about 2.5 hours, but in practice the journey usually takes around 2 hours.

Haneda Airport can be reached from central Tokyo in under 1 hour by train. Japan Airlines operates these flights, with one-way fares generally ranging from approximately ¥18,000 to ¥22,000.

From Narita Airport, direct flights are operated by Peach Aviation. Narita Airport is about 1.5 hours from central Tokyo by train. As Peach is a low-cost carrier, fares can be as low as around ¥4,000, though prices vary significantly depending on the season. Please note that during the winter season, flight frequency is reduced to about three flights per week.

By Air from Osaka

there are direct flights to Amami Oshima from both Osaka (Itami) Airport and Kansai International Airport.
The official flight time is listed as about 2 hours, but in practice the journey usually takes around 1.5 hours.

Osaka Airport is conveniently located. It takes about 40 minutes from central Osaka by subway and monorail, and about 1 hour from Kyoto by direct bus from Kyoto Station.
Japan Airlines operates this route, and fares are often in the range of 12,000 to 20,000 JPY one way.

Kansai International Airport is located a bit farther away and takes about 1 hour by train from central Osaka.
Peach Aviation operates direct flights from Kansai Airport, with fares starting from around 3,500 JPY one way.
Please note that during the winter season, flights are reduced and usually operate about three days per week.

By Air from Fukuoka

Fukuoka Airport is very conveniently located, just about 10 minutes from the city center by subway.
From Fukuoka Airport, it takes approximately 1 hour by flight to reach Amami Oshima.

Flights often depart early in the morning from Fukuoka and return in the evening from Amami, allowing you to enjoy a full day of sightseeing on the island both on your arrival day and your departure day.
Japan Airlines operates this route, with fares typically ranging from 15,000 to 25,000 JPY one way.

By Air from Kagoshima

Kagoshima Airport is located about 40 minutes by bus from Kagoshima-Chuo Station in the city center.
From Kagoshima Airport, there are frequent direct flights to Amami Oshima, with Japan Airlines operating 4 to 5 flights per day and Skymark operating 2 flights per day, offering plenty of options. The flight time is approximately 1 hour.

Fares on Japan Airlines are typically around 12,000 JPY one way, while Skymark offers lower fares ranging from approximately 4,000 to 7,000 JPY one way.

By Air from Okinawa

Naha Airport on Okinawa main island is located about 20 minutes from the city center by monorail.
Japan Airlines operates flights from Naha to Amami Oshima, with fares typically ranging from 20,000 to 25,000 JPY one way.

Please note that while there are direct flights from Naha to Amami Oshima, flights from Amami Oshima back to Naha usually stop at Yoron Airport along the way.

By Air From & To Other Islands

There are daily direct flights operated by Japan Airlines between Amami Oshima and nearby islands such as Tokunoshima, Kikaijima, and Yoronjima.
As these islands are close to Amami Oshima, flight times are short, usually around 30 minutes.

Please note that these routes are operated by small aircraft, so flights may be frequently delayed or canceled due to strong winds or poor weather conditions.

Ferry to Amami

Ferries operate between Kagoshima, Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabujima, and Okinawa’s main island.
In Kagoshima, ferries depart from Kagoshima New Port (Amami Okinawa Ferry Terminal) .
On Amami Oshima, ferries arrive at and depart from Naze Port.
In Okinawa, ferries operate from Naha Port and Motobu Port.

By Ferry from Kagoshima

There is one ferry per day to Amami Oshima, departing Kagoshima New Port (Amami Okinawa Ferry Terminal) at 18:00.
The Port is located about 15 minutes by taxi from central Kagoshima.
The ferry arrives at Naze Port on Amami Oshima at 5:00 the following morning.

By Ferry from Okinawa

Naha Port in Okinawa is located about 30 minutes from the city center by walking and bus.
The first ferry departs Naha Port at 7:00 a.m. and arrives at Naze Port on Amami Oshima in the evening, stopping at several ports along the way.
