On Amami Oshima, rain is a part of everyday island life. With an annual rainfall of nearly 3,000 mm, the forest is lush, the rivers stay alive, and wildlife thrives.
So even if your weather app shows a little rain during your stay, don’t worry, mangrove kayaking is still one of the best things you can do on a rainy day.
In fact, many guests tell us:
“I’m glad it rained. The mangroves felt magical.”
At Link Adventures, we operate our kayaking tours safely in most rainy conditions, and the forest often becomes even more beautiful.

Why Rainy Days Are Beautiful in the Mangrove Forest
The forest becomes greener and more vibrant
When the leaves get wet, they shine.
The greens turn deeper, richer, almost glowing.
Sometimes a light fog forms over the river, creating an atmosphere you can’t experience on sunny days.
Quiet, peaceful, and almost private
Rainy days naturally bring fewer visitors to the mangrove area.
That means…
- No crowd
- No waiting
- No other kayaks in the tunnel-like mangrove channels
It often feels like you have the entire forest to yourself — a true private experience.
The soundscape is amazing
The gentle rhythm of rain hitting the surface of the river.
The soft paddling of your kayak.
Birdcalls echoing from the forest.
It’s one of the most relaxing atmospheres Amami can offer.

What to Wear & Bring for Rainy Mangrove Kayaking Tour
May – October (Warm Season)
- Quick-dry T-shirt
- Shorts
- Sandals
- Rain jacket (optional)
During summer, temperatures often rise above 25°C, and the humidity is very high.
Because of this, we recommend wearing clothing that can get completely wet from both rain and sweat.
You’re welcome to wear a rain jacket, but honestly, most guests find it more comfortable to enjoy the tour while getting wet naturally. You’ll sweat anyway in the humid weather, and quick-dry clothing keeps you comfortable throughout the tour.
November – March (Cool Season)
- Long-sleeve quick-dry innerwear
- Athletic pants
- Rain jacket (recommended)
- Sandals or water shoes
Winter in Amami can feel colder because of strong winds, and when rain is added, the temperature drops even more. Proper warmth and waterproofing are essential.
Even with a rain jacket, water may slowly seep inside, so it’s better to assume you will get a bit wet.
Staying warm is the key to enjoying the tour safely and comfortably!
What to Bring
- Towel
- Change of clothes (very important)
- Waterproof phone case
- Hat or cap
No matter the season, don’t forget a towel and change of clothes.
Even the best rain jackets can let a bit of water in.
Having dry clothes for after the tour makes a huge difference in comfort.
Rain jackets and sandals are available upon request.
