3 Must-see Forests in Amami Oshima Island

Hello everyone. Amami Oshima is often known for its beautiful beaches, but its forests are also incredibly stunning. In this article, I will introduce three must-visit forests when you come to Amami Oshima.

1. Kinsakubaru Forest

The most famous forest is the Kinsakubaru National Forest. Eco-tours to this forest are popular, and you can only enter with a certified guide. During the approximately 2-kilometer round-trip walk, you can see endemic plants and colony of tree ferns. The path is flat, making it easy to walk for both children and the elderly.

2. Tatsugo Forest

Tatsugo forest is known as Amami Nature Observation Forest. This forest is located in Tatsugo Town in the northern part of Amami Oshima. It is part of a national park and is home to many endemic plants and animals, as well as migratory birds. There is even a bird-watching hut. The forest also has an observation deck where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the northern beaches and sea. Tourists can visit on their own, and there are parking facilities and a visitor center.

3. Mt.Yuwandake

Mt. Yuwandake hosts one of the most important forests in Amami Oshima’s World Heritage area. Thanks to the unique cloud forest environment, many endemic species can only be found on this mountain. There are two hiking routes, though access to the summit is restricted to protect the environment. However, you can hike to a nearby observation deck.
