On a rainy afternoon, I drive alone to the forest. The end of the rainy season is near. Today, my goal is to photograph the Amami Ishikawa’s Frog. Unlike my usual haphazard wandering through the forest, today’s shoot is well-prepared in advance.
About half a year ago, I entered this forest with guidance from a senior guide. It was then that I was told there were Amami Ishikawa’s Frogs in the hollow of a particular tree. They should still be there. A few days ago, I confirmed their presence while on a guided tour.
With the rainy season underway, and the temperature and humidity rising, frogs and snakes have become more active. The Amami Ishikawa’s Frogs, which were not around in winter, have likely come out now because it’s a more comfortable season for them.
I feel a surge of excitement. I enter the forest. The tree I’m looking for is just a short distance from the forest entrance.
I place my camera in front of the tree and look up at the hollow. There they are—two frogs. A larger and a smaller Amami Ishikawa’s Frog are sitting at the entrance of the hollow, back to back.
I quickly take pictures. The frogs don’t move an inch.
Seeing these frogs during the day is rare, and I feel like a long-cherished wish has come true.

梅雨明けは近い。
今日の目当てはアマミイシカワガエルの撮影だ。
いつものように闇雲に森の中を歩き回るのではなく、今日は事前の下調べを済ませた上での撮影だ。
約半年前、先輩ガイドの案内でこの森に入った。その時に教えてもらった木のウロにアマミイシカワガエルがいるのだ。
いや、いるだろう。数日前は確かにいた。
ガイド中に確認していた。
梅雨時期になり、気温も湿度も高くなったおかげでカエルやヘビ類が活発になってきた。冬にはいなかったアマミイシカワガエルも過ごしやすい時期になったので出てきたのだろう。
期待に胸を膨らます。
森に入る。お目当ての木は森の入り口からすぐそこだ。
木の前にカメラを置き、ウロを見上げる。
いた。しかも2匹。
大小のアマミイシカワガエルが背中を向かい合わせた状態でウロの入り口付近に鎮座している。
早速写真を撮る。
カエルは微動だにしない。
昼間にこのカエルを見ることは珍しく、念願が叶った気分だ。
